National Coaches Week Feature: The Work Beyond the Whistle

When we think about coaches, we often think about what happens on the field, court, rink or pitch, but coaches do so much for their athletes before and after the whistle blows.
Coaches are answering questions from athletes and parents, organizing equipment, preparing practices, managing schedules, tracking attendance, making sure players are where they need to be and supporting athletes through both the highs and lows of a season.
Coaching goes beyond the game
Coaches are often the first person an athlete turns to when they need support. They celebrate the big moments, provide encouragement after a tough loss and help athletes navigate challenges that have nothing to do with the scoreboard.
They help build confidence. They teach teamwork and accountability. They create an environment where athletes can develop, compete and, hopefully, enjoy being part of a team. Then there’s everything happening behind the scenes.
Equipment needs to be organized and ready. Rosters need to be managed. Schedules need to be communicated. Forms and requirements need to be completed. Travel may need to be coordinated. Athletes and families need updates. There are practices to plan, games to prepare for and countless small details that need attention throughout a season.
For many coaches, especially those balancing coaching with work, family and other responsibilities, the administrative side of running a team can take valuable time away from the reason they became a coach in the first place.
Helping coaches spend more time coaching
At Univerus Sport & Recreation, we believe technology should make sport easier for the people who make it happen.
Our solutions help organizations manage many of the administrative tasks that come with running teams and programs, from registration and rosters to communication, compliance, scheduling and more.
By bringing information and processes together, organizations can help reduce the amount of time coaches spend chasing information, managing administrative tasks and keeping track of the details that come with every season.
That means coaches can spend more time doing what they do best: working with their athletes, preparing their teams and creating positive experiences through sport.
About National Coaches Week
National Coaches Week is a week-long celebration to recognize the positive impact coaches have on athletes, participants, and communities. Coordinated by the Coaching Association of Canada, the recognition runs from September 14-20, 2026.
Behind every great athlete is a coach who inspires, mentors, and leads on and off the field. Coaches dedicate countless hours to building not just stronger athletes, but stronger people. At Univerus Sport & Recreation, we are proud to support their work with tools that simplify program management so they can focus on what matters most: their athletes.
This National Coaches Week, we say #ThanksCoach for the passion, leadership, and lasting impact coaches bring to sport every day!
